two items from the department of validation:
1. three recent stories about florida. things i’ve been saying, mostly during the summer, about florida’s fucked-ness versus other parts of the country. the most interesting tidbit is that florida’s population fell for the first time since 1900.
2. less validating than #1, but a story on the “facebook exodus” in the nytimes. obviously, this isn’t happening on a large-scale (or probably at all), but i’m glad to see people objecting to the commodification of friendship. i still think there’s a lot of utility in the facebook platform, but it seems inevitable that people will tire of it (or that facebook will start alienating more and more people), and something else will pop up. let’s just hope it’s not twitter. it is also comforting to see that the nytimes has enough faith in their readers to recommend reading habermas for insight into why people might be leaving facebook. or, as this guy says, “No longer wasting time on Facebook? You finally have time to bone up on the Frankfurt School’s critique of instrumental reason!”
